Third Prorogation for Prime Minister Harper

OTTAWA – Parliament will return in October with a new Speech from the Throne. Prime Minister Stephen Harper had confirmed that the current session of the House of Commons has been prorogued. The Prime Minister said today, in Whitehorse, “There will be a new throne speech in the fall, obviously the House will be prorogued in anticipation of that. We will come back in October, is our tentative timing.”

The Conservatives prorogued the House of Commons three times since coming to office. In 2008, prorogation was used to head off efforts of the NDP and Liberals under a Conservative minority government that could have see the Tories ousted and a coalition government formed.

In 2010 the Conservatives also prorogued Parliament just ahead of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. That prorogation came as the government was under fire over the handling of prisoners of war in Afghanistan.

The move to prorogue Parliament is likely seen as a way to offer the newly sworn in cabinet the time to put a new stamp on the Conservative Government.

The Prime Minister also has shared with reporters in the North that he will lead the Conservative Party into the next federal election.
