Shelter House in Thunder Bay is getting some added help
THUNDER BAY – Shelter House is getting some help from the Ontario Government. “Our organization works to ensure that everyone that is hungry can access food 24 hours a day and seven days a week. We also know that taking part in team sports builds self-confidence and a sense of inclusion. We are very grateful to receive financial support from the Provincial government for these initiatives,” comments Patti Harju the Executive Director at Shelter House.
The Ontario Government is helping Shelter House Thunder Bay to better serve the needs of their clients. Shelter House has recently been awarded funding for two projects.
NOHFC Fund: Through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation’s (NOHFC) “Northern Ontario Youth Internship & Co-op Program”, Shelter House will receive $27,000 to employ a Kitchen Manager Intern. Under the supervision of the lead operations supervisor, the intern will be responsible for both culinary and supervisory aspects of the kitchen operations, to allow for better and more efficient use of resources.
This internship position will also allow support staff’s primary focus to be on client care, weekly menu planning, and preparation of nutritious and diverse meals for client needs.
OSRCF Fund: Through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport’s “Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund” (OSRCF), the province is supporting a Shelter House project that will increase opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to participate in recreational activities. The organization will receive $28,033 to implement a Street Soccer Program for its clients.
Street Soccer for the Homeless
Adopting a successful model used in 12 other urban centres across Canada, and using the motto ‘A Ball Can Change the World’, the philosophy behind this initiative is to give clients a healthy, fun pastime, as well as building self-esteem and relationships through an organized activity.
The ultimate goal after the 2-year project is to have an established homeless soccer league in Thunder Bay, and a team to participate in the Street Soccer Canadian Championships.
“Our government is proud to support community organizations that help people get active, stay fit and live healthier lives. Getting more people involved in good nutrition and sport contributes to a healthier and more united community. I am pleased that we are able to support Shelter House Thunder Bay by funding these two important projects,” stated MPP Bill Mauro.
