THUNDER BAY – 4K is four times the definition and is the latest standard for filmmakers in Hollywood. “The picture quality is simply breathtaking,” said Piotr Skowronski, Director and Editing Supervisor at Imaginarium Studio Inc. “We’ve never before witnessed this level of clarity, colour, or vivid footage on digital video. People are awestruck when they see 4K Ultra High Definition for the first time.”
Imaginarium Studios in Thunder Bay is showcasing the new standard. Some might say a picture is worth more than 4000 words nowadays. Today, for the first time in history, a small Thunder Bay audience witnessed the very first images of Thunder Bay in 4K Ultra High Definition at a screening hosted inside Imaginarium Studio Inc.
The screening marked the arrival of the latest Hollywood-quality film technology called “4K Ultra High Definition” – now available in Thunder Bay. The picture on a 4K-compatible television is 4 times clearer than HD, with 4000 lines of resolution. It’s what the mainstream film industry is referring to as the future standard for television.
“In about a year we expect 4K TVs to become affordable for the mainstream public. They will become the new norm, taking over from HDTV,” says Milosz Skowronski, Producer and Operations Manager at Imaginarium Studio Inc. “Up until 8 weeks ago, we’d never seen a 4K picture – now we can finish and display 4K Ultra High Definition footage and we’re on the leading-edge of film technology. This is the highest standard out there.”
The film crew at Imaginarium spent four and half days shooting during the “magic hour” (sunset/sunrise) to complete the first-ever local 4K footage featuring Thunder Bay. The footage highlights scenes of marina park, the cascades, and views from Hillcrest Park entirely completed for the first time in 4K Ultra High Definition.
The Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre has supported Imaginarium since the company’s inception. Judy Sander, Manager of Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre, says this is another example how Thunder Bay is competing on an international level. “In the past, due to our remote location and smaller-scale film industry, Thunder Bay was sometimes labeled as ‘behind’ on technological advances – however, that’s not the case at all. Now we have access to the latest Hollywood film technology.”
“It’s really exciting and thrilling to see Imaginarium create in 4K Ultra High Definition – at the highest standard,” says Sander. “It’s a sneak peek of the future of TV and you truly have to see it for yourself.”
Skowronski shares that plans are underway to have a screening spot set up at The Power Centre in Thunder Bay in a month.
About 4K Ultra Hight Definition
The term 4K Ultra High Definition (4K UHD) refers to the horizontal resolution at 4,000 pixels. As of June 2013, 4K-compatible televisions were introduced to the mainstream market, however 4K cameras are still professional market priced. The first footage in 4K is now being created and viewed on 4K TV’s in South Korea. As well, the Brazil World Cup will be broadcast in 4K UHD, and the BBC is working on it’s first documentary in 4K UHD.
4K UHD is a resolution of 3840 lines × 2160 lines (8.3 megapixels, aspect ratio 16:9). It has twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of the HDTV format, with four times as many pixels overall.
