THUNDER BAY – The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority have continued the Flood Watch for the Lakehead Region including: City of Thunder Bay, Municipalities of Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge , Shuniah and the Townships of O’Connor, Conmee, Gillies and Dorion.
The area has received approximately 10 millimetres of precipitation over the last 24 hours. Precipitation is expected to begin today and continue over the next few days, with amounts in excess of 70 millimetres possible over the next 48 hours . Thunderstorms are also possible which could bring additional locali zed precipitation.
Flood Watch Continues until Tuesday
Area watercourses have reacted very minimally to the received precipitation; however , may react very quickly in the event of heavy rain, prolonged rain and/or downpours due to thunderstorms. The public is advised to continue to exercise caution in and around area waterways and to continue to pay attention to weather forecasts over the long weekend. There continues to be a threat of localized flooding and ponding in low lying areas.
A Flood Watch is issued when the assessed conditions indicate that the potential for flooding exists.
Authority Staff will continue to monitor conditions as part of its Flood Forecasting and Warning program.
The Flood Watch continues to remain in effect until Tuesday May 21, 2013 and will be updated as conditions warrant.
