THUNDER BAY – For Thunder Bay, there is a risk of flooding in low lying areas according to the Lakehead Regional Conservation Authority. Water levels in Thunder Bay are rising today. The floodway is working exactly as it should, diverting water.
The Lakehead Regional Conservation Authority is monitoring all of the forecasts and keeping a focus on the weather.
The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has issued a Flood Outlook Statement for the Lakehead Region including: City of Thunder Bay, Municipalitiess of Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah and the Townships of O’Connor, Conmee, Gillies and Dorion.
Water levels have risen throughout the watershed due to recent precipitation and snow melt. Additional precipitation is forecasted over the next several days, which when combined with snow melt will result in increased water levels and flows.
In the City of Thunder Bay the Neebing-Mclntyre Floodway, which protects the lower Neebing River and Intercity area, is continuing to divert flows and is expected to continue to d ivert flows over the next several days.
The threat of localized pending and flooding exists in low lying areas. The public are advised to exercise caution in and around area waterways.
A Watershed Condition s Statement-Flood Outlook prov ides early notice of the potential for flooding based on weather forecasts calling for heavy rain, snow melt, high wind or other conditions that could lead to high runoff or cause ice jams.
