One of our local libraries best kept secrets is their Book Club in a Bag Program. I see the affects of addictions every day in my work.
There are three books which I have read about addictions which really helped me understand this disease. Tweak by Nic Scheff will give you insight into addictions as told by a young man struggling for years with a variety of drugs. Beautiful Boy by David Scheff will give you the side of a parent with an addicted child.
AIDS Thunder Bay thinks so highly of these books that they donated 10 copies of each to the libraries Book Club in a Bag Program. Any book club can sign out a bag of these books, at no charge, and use them for study. Another book I would also recommend is Gabor Mate’s The Realm of the Hungry Ghost (also available at the library). Mate has the knowledge and wisdom of a physician who has worked with the addicts of Vancouver for over a decade.
All three of these books are available at our local library and I encourage people wanting some insight into drug addictions to take a look at these titles.
