THUNDER BAY – Dilico workers have voted for strike action. Members of the Communication, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada Local 7-O, who are employed by Dilico Anishnabek Family Services, have overwhelmingly voted to support their bargaining committee with a strike vote. Voting took place during the week of April 15th, and included bargaining unit employees from Longlac, Mobert, Marathon, Armstrong, Nipigon and Thunder Bay.

At well attended meetings held across Northwestern Ontario, employees  voted  95 % in favour of taking strike action is necessary. The collective agreement expired March 31, 2012, and sporadic bargaining has not resulted in a renewal of the agreement.

Dilico Anishnabek Family Services

Employees of Dilico provide child welfare, health and mental health services to aboriginal communities across Northwestern Ontario.

“There are key issues which need addressing by the employer, and so far they have been ignored”’ stated Marvin Pupeza, National Representative for the CEP.  “ Workloads, off hour coverage , wages and benefit improvements  are just a few of the many issues remaining to be resolved”’ continued Pupeza, “and these employees who provide unique and crucial services to the aboriginal community deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.”

The Union has notified the provincial appointed conciliator of the results, and are awaiting confirmation of additional negotiation dates.
