THUNDER BAY – Health – Bachelor Auction – It’s that time of year again! In just a few short weeks, 10 of Thunder Bay’s finest and most eligible Bachelors will be up on stage, strutting their stuff and raising money for the Northern Cancer Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.
This year marks the 15th Anniversary of the event and the organizing committee can’t wait to welcome ladies to the special night on Thursday, April 11 at Thunder Bay’s Valhalla Inn. This year’s theme will celebrate the wonderful vibe of New York City.

Each Bachelor is raising money and you can now donate to them online by visiting: Bachelors for Hope 100% of the proceeds stay here in Northwestern Ontario [/sws_pullquote_right] “Year after year, this night just keeps getting bigger and better,” said Deb Emery, Production Chair. “In the past 14 years, we’ve been able to raise $749,315 to ensure excellence in breast cancer prevention, early detection, education, treatment and research. In our 15th year, we really want to make a big splash and so we’ve set our fundraising goal at $100,000. We know how generous our community is and we know we can make this happen with their support.”
So what can women expect from the event?
“First off, we start with a delicious gourmet dinner,” said Athena Kreiner, Senior Development Officer, Health Sciences Foundation. “Throughout the evening there’s a variety of entertainment, raffles and our ever-popular Bling Blitz, where one lucky woman will bring home a beautiful new diamond ring. And then we get to the main event – the auction of 10 incredible Bachelors, each of whom comes with a specially designed date package.”
This year’s date packages feature a variety of tempting experiences including lunches and dinners at some of Thunder Bay’s finest dining establishments, a yacht charter, a weekend at Dog Lake Resort, a three night stay at Knobby’s Fly in Fishing Resort and out of town trips including one to New York City, to name a few. And of course, there’ll be a few surprises in store.
Women frequently ask, ‘Do I have to bring my Bachelor on the date?’
“Women have the option of bringing their Bachelor on the date, but it’s not required,” said Kreiner. “We find that, quite often, women like to bring the Bachelor for lunch, as a way of saying ‘thank you’ for their dedication to the cause, but frequently they bring their significant other or go with a group of friends on some of the get-away packages.”
And the Bachelors do deserve a big ‘thank you’. Each Bachelor commits to raising pledges prior to the event night and they are in rehearsal each week learning their top secret Bachelor Dance. Plus, they get up on stage the night of the event.
“It takes a lot of courage to be a Bachelor,” said Emery. “And when these men sign up they really do dedicate themselves to raising funds for breast cancer. They are a fantastic group to work with.”
