On behalf of local residents, I want to congratulate David Zimmer on his appointment as Minister of Aboriginal Affairs,” said Leek. “It’s great that the recent Throne Speech laid out firm commitments to improve economic opportunities, education and skills training for Aboriginal communities in Kenora-Rainy River and across Ontario.”

“Building on our strong relationship to increase skills training, create more jobs, improve education outcomes in Aboriginal communities helps build a stronger and more just Ontario,” said Leek. “It’s great to have a Premier and a new Minister of Aboriginal Affairs who have made working with Aboriginal leadership and communities to improve the quality of life such a priority.”

The new Liberal government announced $1.5 million in annual funding to support five new Community Wellness Development Teams and to increase the use of telemedicine equipment in First Nations treatment centres across Ontario. The recent Throne Speech further highlighted the government’s commitment to Aboriginal partners:

· Ensuring First Nations communities have access to the tools and training they need to fully participate in economic development opportunities, including those related to our natural resources.

· Working with Aboriginal communities to ensure that the benefits of resource development are shared and opportunities for education, training and employment are established.

· And partnering with First Nations to improve education outcomes, calling on the federal government to become a better and more committed partner with First Nation communities in their management of on-reserve education – this includes providing adequate funding.
