Andrea Horwath – Invest in youth

“We need young people earning paycheques, investing in the economy and building toward the future,” said Horwath. “I’ve put forward an achievable proposal that will help businesses that are ready to give young people their first start on the job.”

Horwath was meeting with a panel of youth representatives at Youth Centres Thunder Bay to hear more from local youth on what issues and problems they face.

The New Democrats First Start on-the-job training program for youth is based on those consultations. Horwath has also proposed closing corporate tax loopholes. For example, a new tax measure will soon allow Ontario’s largest corporations a tax break when they entertain clients or expense meals.

Currently, only smaller companies are eligible. Horwath says that engaging youth will make sure Ontarians are choosing the right path forward for the future.

“We want to work with companies in northern Ontario, and across the province, that are ready to put people to work. Instead of tax breaks for taking in a hockey game in Toronto, let’s help companies that are ready to put people to work,” said Horwath. “Our First Start incentive program is a win-win for young people looking for work and for employers seeking to build a skilled workforce.”
