Black History Month in Thunder Bay

Throughout Black History Month, this upcoming February 2013, a series of events will be held to promote our various cultures and traditions as well to share our organizational purposes with the Thunder Bay community. These events will lead up to the first annual Black History Month Gala that aims to celebrate Black culture and recognize the achievements made by local community members.

Gala Dinner

The evening will include dinner prepared with a combination of spices used in African and Caribbean cuisine. There will be traditional cultural presentations and dances performed by AFCASA and CAMAC members and traditional clothing will be modeled that includes the story and cultural guide behind each garment. The evening’s events will lead up to the first Awards Presentation recognizing the outstanding achievements made by African and Caribbean individuals living in Thunder Bay.

“AFCASA as a club has been in existence in Lakehead University since 1976 and our purpose is to promote African and Caribbean cultural awareness within the Lakehead and Thunder Bay community,” states Lander. “We believe that through education, information, and entertainment we can learn to accept, support and co-exist in harmony and we also believe that we can only move forward when we come together and work as a community”.

CAMAC was formed in 1987 by members of the Caribbean and African community in Thunder Bay who wanted to share their culture and heritage with other Canadians. Today, CAMAC is an inclusive group which brings together people of all races with ties to Africa & the Caribbean. The group works to facilitate the integration of people from mainstream so that everyone can contribute to the well being of Canada and take pride in their new home.
