THUNDER BAY, ON – Girl Power was the focus of the day. “We had a fabulous time, and I think the girls really enjoyed the variety of activities the athletes led them through,” said Amanda Nesbitt Coordinator of Initiatives for Lakehead Athletics. “We are very happy to be delivering this important program to the female youth of Thunder Bay, with the help of the City’s staff and volunteers that came out, it made the day a great success.”
Girl Power Partnerships
The City of Thunder Bay’s Girl Power program partnered with Lakehead Athletics’ ActiveU program to deliver a day of fun-filled activities this past Monday at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse.
Fifty girls in grades 5-9 were in attendance for the all-day program, which encouraged girls to try new activities and build self esteem and confidence. With the help of some of Lakehead’s varsity athletes, participants were led through a series of different sports and games, including wrestling, yoga, basketball and team building activities. Among the Thunderwolves were coach Brock Curtis and his wrestlers, Track athletes Kyle McGillivray and Jessica Baraskewich, Daphne and Moira Haggarty from the Nordic ski team, and basketball players Emily Lerette, Winta Desta and Alex Robichaud.
Nesbitt was enthused by the response from the participants.
Melisa Walczak, Girl Power Coordinator for the City says, “Since the event, we have received a lot of positive feedback from the girls who attended and their parents, overall the day was a huge success. We were thrilled to work in partnership with Lakehead staff and athletes to provide an active, fun-filled day of team building and sports for the girls to participate in.”
