Thunder Bay International Airport reports record traffic in 2012

Thunder Bay International AirportTHUNDER BAY – Business News – The Thunder Bay International Airport is a key hub in the economy of both Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario. 2012 saw Thunder Bay International Airport reach a new annual passenger volume record. The Airport hosted over 761,300 passengers over the past 12 months. This represents 5.8% growth in volume in the past year.

Scott McFadden, President & CEO of the Thunder Bay International Airports Authority (TBIAA) is encouraged by results and believes this bodes well for 2013.

“We are starting the year with all winter charter companies reporting strong demand.” commented McFadden. “These are the perfect conditions for the introduction of the new United Airlines service early in 2013.” United Airlines will begin daily jet service between Thunder Bay and Chicago on February 14, 2013.

Thunder Bay International Airport

TBIAA is the private not-for-profit, non-shareholder corporation responsible for the operation of the Thunder Bay International Airport. TBIAA receives no government funding for the operation of the Airport. Economic activity related to the Airport is responsible for an estimated $.5 billion dollars in GDP annually and over 5000 direct or indirect jobs.

United Airlines will offer daily, non-stop United Express jet service between Thunder Bay and United’s hub at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport beginning February 14,
2013.  The flights are timed for daily departures from Thunder Bay scheduled for 6:00am arriving in Chicago at 6:35am. Early arrival into Chicago will provide local travelers with excellent connections to United’s global route network. United offers nearly 600 nonstop flights each day from Chicago to more than 150 destinations worldwide – more flight and destination options than any other airline.

Return flights, depart Chicago at 6:00pm arriving in Thunder Bay at 8:40pm.

Service begins with an arrival from Chicago on February 14 with the first departure from Thunder Bay on February 15, 2013.
