THUNDER BAY – The Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball team improved their record to 2-4 on the season with a definitive 73-48 win over the Laurentian Lady Vees on Friday evening.
Lakehead would do great work on Sasha Polischuk, who to this point has been the leading scorer in the OUA. She was 0-8 from the field with 1 point after 20 minutes. She would continue to struggle offensively in the 2nd half, finishing with 5 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists on 2-15 shooting.
Halftime score was 34-15 for the T-Wolves. The Lady Vees would win the third quarter 19-15, but Lakehead put them away for good with a strong finish in the 4th quarter (24-14).
Ayse Kalkan (Winnipeg, MB) was a rebounding machine in this game, with 12 points and 10 rebounds in 16 first half minutes of play. She would keep on rolling in the second half, finishing with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Carolyn Fragale led the T-Wolves with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists, followed by Katie Ulakovic with 17 points and 5 assists. Ulakovic showed a newer shade of aggression in her offense on this evening, shooting without hesitation from downtown, totalling a 5-for-14 performance from 3-point range. Laurentian shot 2-15 as a team from behind the arc.
Lakehead out-rebounded the Vees 51-36.
Top Vee scorer was Erin Simpson with 11 points. Adrienne Moreau had 8 rebounds.
Jon Kreiner stated, “I am really happy with our teams defensive intensity and energy tonight. We executed almost everything we talked about defensively in the first half of the game and did a fantastic job on Sasha Polishchuk. Ayse Kalkan defended her very well and was awesome on offense (15 points, 14 rebounds) and I was very proud of Katie Ulakovic as she was aggressive on O and had an assist to turnover ratio of 5-1 in the game. Carolyn Fragale continues to have a stellar season with 20 points and 6 rebounds and 3 assists. A great team effort but we need to be greedy to go against a tough York team tomorrow.”
The women play York tomorrow evening at 6 pm.
