67-Year-Old Man – George Hookimaw – Charged in Historic Sexual Assault Investigation in Attawapiskat and Moosonee

ATTAWAPISKAT & MOOSONEE, ON – A 67-year-old man has been arrested and charged following an extensive investigation into historic sexual assaults in Attawapiskat First Nation and Moosonee.

The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) Crime Unit launched its investigation in November 2024, leading to the identification of three victims. According to police, the alleged assaults took place between 1971 and 1994, with the victims ranging in age from four to 17 years old at the time of the incidents.


Charges Laid Following Investigation

Following months of investigative work, police arrested and charged George Hookimaw, 67, of Attawapiskat First Nation, on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. He now faces the following charges under the Criminal Code of Canada:

  • Indecent Assault (3 counts)
  • Gross Indecency (3 counts)
  • Sexual Assault (2 counts)
  • Sexual Exploitation

Hookimaw appeared for a bail hearing on Wednesday, March 19, and was released with conditions pending a future court appearance.
