From Rain to Ice Pellets to Deep Freeze—A True Northern Ontario Special!

Sioux Lookout’s weather for March 15-17 brings rain, ice pellets, snow, and bitter wind chills down to -25°C. St. Patrick’s Day will be cold but calm

Sioux Lookout is in for a wild ride of weather swings this weekend. Rain, thunderstorms, and ice pellets will make for a messy Saturday, followed by a sharp temperature drop and frigid wind chills heading into next week. If you’re hoping for spring, well… not quite yet!

Saturday, March 15: A Weather Buffet—Rain, Snow & Ice Pellets

The morning starts mild at 2°C, but don’t get too comfortable—things are about to change fast. Humidity sits at 96%, and barometric pressure is falling at 98.6 kPa, meaning a storm system is moving in. Expect rain turning into snow and ice pellets by mid-morning, with a risk of thunderstorms adding some extra excitement to the mix.

By noon, northwest winds will pick up to 30 km/h, gusting to 50 km/h, and temperatures will plummet to -6°C in the afternoon. With the wind chill, it’ll feel more like -13°C. Expect 5 to 10 cm of snow and ice accumulation, making for slippery road conditions. If you have travel plans, prepare for winter driving hazards.

Tonight, snow tapers off, leaving behind cloudy skies with a 40% chance of flurries. Another 2 cm of snow is possible. The wind remains strong at 30 km/h, gusting to 50 km/h, and temperatures drop to -14°C, with wind chills reaching a bone-chilling -25°C overnight.

Sunday, March 16: Frigid but Calming Down

Sunday remains mainly cloudy with a 40% chance of early morning flurries. The wind will stay northwest at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h, before easing up in the afternoon.

The high for the day? A chilly -5°C. However, the morning wind chill will make it feel like -23°C, slowly improving to -10°C in the afternoon. Even the sun is hiding out, with a UV index of only 2.

Sunday night brings cloudy periods and a low of -15°C, making for a bitterly cold night.

Monday, March 17: A Cold St. Patrick’s Day, But Some Sunshine

Monday features a mix of sun and clouds with a 30% chance of flurries. The high reaches -2°C, which is a slight improvement—but still very much winter.

By nighttime, expect cloudy periods with a low of -14°C.

What to Wear?

  • Saturday: Full winter gear! A waterproof coat, warm layers, and grippy boots for the icy mix.
  • Sunday: A thick winter coat, hat, gloves, and scarf—wind chills will be nasty.
  • Monday: Slightly milder, but still cold. A warm coat and layers will do the trick.
