Winter Weather Advisory in Effect

Sault Ste. Marie’s winter weather advisory brings snow, gusty winds, and icy roads today. More flurries tonight with up to 10 cm. Stay warm and drive safe!

Sault Ste. Marie and St. Joseph Island are waking up to a Winter Weather Travel Advisory this morning, with snow, gusty winds, and icy roads making for hazardous travel conditions.

Snowfall amounts of up to 5 cm are expected, with wind gusts reaching 60 km/h, leading to localized blowing snow and reduced visibility, particularly near Whitefish Bay and the North Channel. Conditions should improve by evening, but roads and sidewalks will remain slippery—so take it slow out there!

Current Conditions in Sault Ste. Marie

As of 7:48 AM EST at Sault Ste. Marie Airport, the temperature is -11.2°C, with light snow falling. The humidity sits at 84%, and the barometric pressure is 100.0 kPa and rising. Winds from the north-northwest at 23 km/h, gusting to 33 km/h, are making it feel like -20°C outside. Visibility is reduced to 5 km due to the snowfall.

Thursday’s Forecast: Snowy and Windy Start, Icy Roads Likely

Snowfall will taper off this morning, but local blowing snow will persist into the early afternoon. Expect strong northwest winds at 40 km/h, gusting to 60 km/h, which will keep the wind chill brutal—around -23°C this morning and -11°C this afternoon. The high today will be -3°C, but with these strong winds, it won’t feel anywhere close to that.

Tonight: More Flurries and Accumulating Snow

The snow isn’t done yet—expect flurries to begin again this evening, bringing an additional 5 to 10 cm of accumulation overnight. Winds from the west at 30 km/h will keep things blustery, and temperatures will drop to -11°C, with a wind chill near -19°C overnight. If you’re heading out, be prepared for poor visibility and snow-covered roads.

Looking Ahead: Cold and Windy into the Weekend

  • Friday, March 7: Flurries will continue through the morning, with another 2 cm of snow possible. Winds will remain strong from the northwest at 40 km/h, gusting to 60 km/h. The high will be -5°C, but wind chills will make it feel like -21°C in the morning and -13°C in the afternoon.

  • Saturday, March 8: A break from the snow! Expect a mix of sun and cloud with a high of -2°C.

    • Saturday Night: Cloudy periods, 30% chance of flurries, low of -9°C.

Historic Weather for March 6

On this day in Sault Ste. Marie’s history, the warmest March 6th saw temperatures climb to 12.8°C, while the coldest dropped to -28.9°C. Today, we’re leaning well toward the colder end of the spectrum!

What to Wear?

  • Morning & Afternoon: Heavy winter coat, gloves, scarf, and boots—the wind chill of -23°C will be biting!
  • Evening: Snow boots and layers—another round of flurries will make sidewalks and roads slippery.

Weather Trivia: The Soo’s Snowy Reputation

Did you know? Sault Ste. Marie is one of Ontario’s snowiest cities, averaging around 320 cm (10.5 feet) of snowfall per year! That’s enough to bury a full-grown moose in snow (not that we recommend trying).

Stay warm, drive carefully, and watch out for those icy roads!
