Be Ready for a Wintery Mix as a Storm Moves In

Sudbury faces a winter storm with snow, freezing rain, and rain through Thursday. Travel conditions could be hazardous. Cold temperatures return by late week

Sudbury – Weather Desk – Sudbury is under a Winter Storm Warning, and Mother Nature is throwing a bit of everything our way—snow, freezing rain, and rain—starting this evening and lasting until late Thursday. Expect up to 15 cm of snow, periods of freezing rain, and rainfall amounts of 10 to 15 mm for areas south of Highway 17. With frozen ground unable to absorb all this moisture, roads, sidewalks, and parking lots could turn into skating rinks. If travel isn’t essential, it might be best to hold off until conditions improve.

Current Conditions (March 4, 2025 – 7:00 AM EST)

Sudbury is waking up to light snow and a temperature of -3°C at the airport. The humidity is high at 95%, which explains the damp, heavy feel in the air. A south wind at 14 km/h makes it feel like -8°C with the wind chill. Visibility sits at 5 km, so it’s not too bad—yet.

Historically, March 4 has had a temperature swing. The record high for this date in Sudbury is 11.5°C, while the coldest was a bitter -31.2°C.

Today’s Forecast: Snow, Ice Pellets, and Rain

Expect periods of snow, with ice pellets mixing in this morning and transitioning to rain this afternoon. Freezing drizzle could make an appearance this morning, adding to the slipperiness. Snow and ice pellet accumulation could reach 2 cm, but areas north of Highway 17 could see up to 10 cm of fresh snow. Winds will be light at 15 km/h, with a high of 2°C. The UV index remains low at 1, so no need for sunscreen today.

Tonight, expect cloudy skies with a 40% chance of flurries or rain showers early in the evening, before rain starts late tonight, except for those north of Highway 17, where it will remain as snow. There’s also a risk of freezing rain overnight, so be cautious if you’re heading out. Some fog patches may develop as well. Rainfall could reach 5 mm, while northern areas could see another 5 cm of snow. The temperature will hover near 1°C all night.

Wednesday: Rain, Snow, and a Risk of Freezing Rain

The wintry mix continues into Wednesday with periods of rain and drizzle, except for northern areas, where it will remain as snow through the morning. By afternoon, the risk of freezing rain returns. Fog patches from the night before will dissipate in the morning. Expect rainfall amounts between 5 to 10 mm, while north of Highway 17, snowfall could reach another 10 cm. The high will be 3°C.

By Wednesday night, the storm turns fully wintry, with snowfall continuing and temperatures dropping to -9°C.

Thursday and Beyond: A Cold Return to Winter

By Thursday, the storm begins to ease, but cloudy skies and a 60% chance of snow remain, with a chilly high of -7°C. Overnight, things clear up but temperatures plummet to -13°C.

Friday brings a mix of sun and cloud, with a 30% chance of flurries and a high of -3°C. The cold sticks around Friday night, with cloudy periods and a low of -15°C.

Wardrobe Recommendations

Layer up! With temperatures fluctuating around freezing and a mix of rain, snow, and ice, waterproof boots, a warm jacket, gloves, and a hat are all necessary. If you’re venturing out at night, an extra layer and traction-friendly footwear will help prevent slips on icy sidewalks.

Weather Trivia: Ice Storms and the “Perfect” Freezing Rain Recipe

Did you know that freezing rain occurs when warm air sits above a layer of cold air near the surface? Raindrops fall through the warm layer but freeze on contact with the cold ground, creating a sheet of ice. That’s why freezing rain is so dangerous—it looks like regular rain until it coats everything in ice!
