Chilly Start for PDAC, but Milder Days Ahead

Toronto wakes up to a frigid -15°C as PDAC kicks off, but a gradual warm-up is on the way. Expect flurries today, sunshine Monday, and rain by midweek

As the global mining community gathers in Toronto for PDAC, Mother Nature has decided to put on a winter showcase—albeit a gentler one than last year. Last year it was +20c through much of the mining convention.

This morning, at 7:00 AM, Toronto Pearson International Airport reported a frigid -15.3°C, with a northwest wind at 9 km/h, making it feel more like -21°C with the wind chill. The humidity sits at 55%, and the barometric pressure is at 102.5 kPa and rising, signaling more stable conditions ahead. Visibility remains excellent at 24 km, giving attendees a clear—if chilly—view of the city.

Sunday’s Forecast: Flurries & a Slight Warm-Up

Expect cloudy skies to take over this morning, bringing a 40% chance of flurries this afternoon. The wind will pick up, shifting to northwest 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h near noon, but the high will climb to -3°C. Despite the slight rise in temperature, the wind chill will still make it feel like -22°C this morning and -9°C in the afternoon. The UV index is 2 (low), so while sunglasses might not be a priority, bundling up certainly is.

Tonight, the skies remain partly cloudy, with another 40% chance of flurries early this evening. Winds will calm down to 15 km/h, and the temperature will drop to -10°C, with a wind chill making it feel closer to -15°C overnight.

Monday: A Break in the Clouds and a Taste of Spring

Monday brings mainly cloudy skies in the morning, but sunshine will break through near noon. A southwest wind will pick up to 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h, pushing temperatures into positive territory with a high of 2°C. However, the morning will still be brisk, with a wind chill of -14°C to start the day. The UV index creeps up to 3 (moderate), so some sunshine is in store.

By Monday night, expect cloudy periods with a low of -3°C, a clear improvement from the deep freeze of the weekend.

Tuesday & Beyond: A Wet Pattern Emerging

Tuesday sees cloudy skies with a 40% chance of rain showers or flurries, but temperatures continue their upward trend, reaching a high of 3°C. By the night, periods of rain will settle in, and the low will hold at 2°C, marking a significant departure from the bitter cold of early March.

Wednesday will feel downright mild, with periods of rain and a high of 6°C. However, the rain continues into the night, with showers and a low of -1°C.

Wardrobe Advice: From Arctic Gear to Rain Boots

For today, layer up with your warmest winter coat, hat, gloves, and a scarf—it’s still a deep freeze out there. Wind-resistant outerwear will help, especially with those gusty conditions picking up in the afternoon. By Monday, lighter layers may be enough by the afternoon, but you’ll still want a warm coat for the chilly morning. Come Tuesday and Wednesday, a waterproof jacket and sturdy boots will be your best bet as wet conditions settle in.

Toronto Weather Trivia: A March to Remember?

Did you know Toronto’s coldest March 2nd on record was a brutal -26.1°C in 1943, while the warmest reached a balmy 15.0°C in 1974? This year, we’re starting off on the colder side, but the upcoming warm-up will feel like a gift for those tired of winter’s chill.
