Snowfall Warning Remains in Effect as Winter Storm Persists

Thunder Bay remains under a Snowfall Warning with up to 25 cm of snow expected. Cold temperatures follow this weekend. Travel remains hazardous. Stay safe!

Residents of Thunder Bay are waking up to a winter wonderland—but not the fun kind—as a Snowfall Warning remains in effect this morning. Snowfall totals of up to 25 cm are expected in some areas, making for a messy and slow-moving Friday.

Due to current and forecasted poor weather and road conditions, ALL STUDENT TRANSPORTATION is cancelled for today, Friday, February 28, 2025.

Service Alert – Severe Weather

Due to severe weather conditions Thunder Bay Transit services are temporarily suspended. We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as soon as service can safely resume.
Check the Transit app or https://nextlift.ca/ for real-time service updates.

Due to the current weather conditions and the cancellation of some city bus services,  the Thunder Bay Food Bank will not be open for our usual hours on Friday February 28th.

Instead, we will open on Monday March 3rd from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

If you were hoping for an early end to the snow, you’ll have to wait until later this afternoon when conditions are expected to ease into scattered flurries.

Current Conditions in Thunder Bay (as of 6:29 AM EST):

  • Temperature: -1.7°C, but feeling like -8°C with the wind chill.
  • Wind: Blowing from the east at 23 km/h, gusting to 34 km/h.
  • Humidity: A near-saturated 99%, meaning everything is damp and heavy.
  • Pressure: 98.9 kPa and falling, indicating that the system is still pushing through.
  • Visibility: 1.2 km due to the snow and drifting snow.

Snowfall Forecast & Travel Impacts

Expect an additional 10 to 15 cm of snow through this morning and early afternoon, with local blowing snow reducing visibility. The heaviest snowfall will impact areas of higher terrain. Once the snow tapers off later today, temperatures will fall to -9°C, making for icy road conditions. Highway travel will remain difficult, so if you must head out, drive cautiously, keep your lights on, and give yourself plenty of stopping distance.

Tonight’s Forecast: Bitter Cold Returns

Once the snow departs, partly cloudy skies take over tonight, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s getting warmer. Winds will shift to the northwest at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h, before calming by morning. Temperatures will plunge to -20°C, with a wind chill of -26°C overnight—a harsh reminder that winter isn’t done with us yet.

Weekend Outlook: Arctic Chill to Brief Warm-Up

  • Saturday, March 1: A sunny but frigid day, with a high of -7°C and a brutal morning wind chill of -29°C. Risk of frostbite is high, so bundle up! The night remains clear, dropping to -23°C.
  • Sunday, March 2: The deep freeze begins to ease with a high of -2°C under sunny skies.
  • Monday, March 3: A surprising warm-up! Expect sunny skies and a high of 8°C, but the night brings a chance of flurries or rain showers with a low of -4°C.

What to Wear:

Today is all about staying dry and warm. Waterproof boots, thick winter coats, and thermal layers are a must. If you’re heading out tonight, don’t forget a hat, gloves, and scarf—frostbite is a real risk as temperatures drop.

Weather Trivia:

Did you know? Thunder Bay’s snowiest February on record saw over 100 cm of snow fall throughout the month. While this storm isn’t breaking records, it’s definitely leaving a mark on winter 2025!

Bottom Line:

Expect heavy snow through early afternoon, then colder temperatures and flurries. Travel will remain tricky, so take it slow if you have to be on the roads. The weekend will be frigid but sunny, with a significant warm-up by Monday—if we can just hang in there a little longer!
