Sudbury Braces for Snowy Weekend with Frigid Wind Chills

Steady Snowfall & Blowing Snow Expected Through Sunday

Sudbury is waking up to light snow and chilly conditions this morning, with a fresh layer of white already on the ground. As of 6:00 AM EST at Greater Sudbury Airport, the temperature sits at -9.4°C, but a southeast wind at 15 km/h is making it feel more like -16°C. The humidity is high at 90%, and the barometric pressure is falling at 102.6 kPa, signaling the continuation of snowy conditions. Visibility is reduced to 5 km due to ongoing snowfall.

Saturday: Snowy Conditions with Milder Temperatures

Expect steady snowfall throughout the day, with 2 to 4 cm of accumulation expected. Winds will remain light at 15 km/h, and temperatures will climb to -5°C by the afternoon. However, the wind chill will still make it feel like -15°C this morning and -9°C later in the day.

Tonight: More Flurries & a Temperature Drop

Periods of snow will taper off this evening, but there’s still a 60% chance of flurries overnight. Winds will shift northeast at 20 km/h, and temperatures will drop to -11°C, with a wind chill making it feel like -19°C overnight. Bundle up if you’re heading out late!

Sunday: More Snow & Stronger Winds

The snow isn’t done just yet! Periods of snow will continue throughout the day, with local blowing snow expected in the afternoon as winds pick up to 30 km/h, gusting to 50 km/h. Another 2 to 4 cm of snow is expected, with temperatures holding steady near -10°C. However, the wind chill will make it feel like a bitter -20°C. Visibility may be reduced due to blowing snow, so if you have travel plans, be prepared for slippery roads and low visibility.

Sunday night will remain cloudy with a 60% chance of flurries, and the low will dip to -19°C.

Monday: Flurries & A Deep Freeze Setting In

Monday will bring cloudy skies with a 30% chance of flurries and a high of -14°C. The nighttime low will plummet to -22°C, so prepare for an even colder start to the week.

Wardrobe Recommendations: Stay Warm & Dry

With persistent snow and biting wind chills, full winter gear is essential. Wear a heavy insulated coat, thermal layers, gloves, a toque, and a scarf to protect against the wind chill, which will make it feel up to 10 degrees colder than the actual temperature. Waterproof boots will also be helpful as snow continues to accumulate.

Sudbury Weather Trivia: Snowy Sudbury’s Record-Breaking Winter

Did you know that Sudbury holds the record for Ontario’s snowiest winter? In the winter of 1970-71, the city was buried under a staggering 414.1 cm of snow! While this weekend’s snowfall won’t come close to that, it’s a reminder that Sudbury is no stranger to serious winter weather.

Stay safe, Sudbury! With more snow and strong winds ahead, it’s the perfect weekend for a cozy day indoors with a warm drink.
