Snowfall Warning in Effect – Up to 25 cm Expected
Sudbury braces for up to 25 cm of snow tonight into Thursday. Dangerous travel conditions expected as a major winter storm moves in. Prepare for heavy snowfall!
Sudbury is waking up to a frigid -26°C this morning, but the real weather story is what’s coming later—a significant winter storm set to arrive this evening.
A Snowfall Warning is in place, with 15 to 25 cm of snow expected between tonight and Thursday morning.
Right now, conditions are mainly clear, but it feels even colder than the thermometer reads, thanks to a wind chill of -35°C. Winds from the east-northeast at 11 km/h are keeping things bitterly cold.
The humidity is at 71%, and the barometric pressure is rising at 103.0 kPa—a signal that change is coming. Visibility is excellent at 24 km, but that will rapidly deteriorate once the storm moves in.
For now, the day remains sunny before clouds roll in early this afternoon. The temperature will attempt to climb to -11°C, but with the wind chill factored in, it’ll feel more like -28°C this morning and -16°C this afternoon.
Tonight: The Storm Arrives
If you have errands to run, get them done early because heavy snow will move in by the evening. Snowfall rates could hit a blinding 2 to 4 cm per hour, with total accumulations of 10 to 15 cm by morning. Winds from the east at 20 km/h will make conditions even worse, but will ease up later in the evening.
Temperatures will drop to -14°C overnight, with a wind chill near -21°C. Travel conditions will become dangerous, so expect poor visibility and snow-covered roads into the early morning hours.
Thursday: Snow Continues Before Tapering Off
The snow won’t stop right away—expect periods of snowfall lasting into the afternoon, with another 2 to 4 cm possible before things settle. Skies will remain mostly cloudy, and it will be a cold and blustery day with a high of -9°C. A northwest wind at 20 km/h will keep the wind chill at -23°C in the morning and -17°C in the afternoon, meaning it won’t feel much different from today.
By Thursday night, cloudy periods with a 30% chance of flurries will continue, with temperatures dropping to -19°C.
Looking Ahead: A Brief Break Before More Snow
Friday will offer a much-needed break with sunny skies and a high of -8°C—not warm, but at least dry. However, it won’t last long. Snow returns Friday night, with a low of -10°C.
Saturday looks like another snowy day, with periods of snow and a high of -5°C. The night will bring a 60% chance of flurries, with temperatures falling to -17°C.
How to Prepare for the Snowstorm
- Commuters: Expect a slow, hazardous drive Thursday morning. If possible, delay travel or work from home.
- Drivers: Ensure your snow tires are on and pack an emergency kit in your car, including blankets and water.
- Pedestrians: Slippery sidewalks and reduced visibility will make walking treacherous—wear grippy boots and extra layers.
- Homeowners: Prepare for heavy, wet snow accumulation—shoveling will be a workout!
Sudbury Weather Trivia
Did you know? The biggest single-day snowfall in Sudbury happened on December 11, 1946, when the city was buried under 53.3 cm of snow in just 24 hours. While this storm won’t break records, 25 cm is still more than enough to cause major disruptions!
