Bitter Cold with a Frostbite Warning

Kenora faces an Extreme Cold Warning with wind chills of -40. Bitter cold sticks around all week, with frostbite risks high. Stay warm and limit outdoor exposure!

Kenora and the Lake of the Woods region are in the grip of an Extreme Cold Warning, with temperatures plunging to -27°C this morning and a wind chill making it feel like -40. If you’re heading outside, be prepared—this is frostbite territory, and skin can freeze within minutes. Winds from the south-southwest are blowing at 12 km/h, keeping things feeling even more bitter. The humidity is 79%, and the barometric pressure is at 102.3 kPa but falling. Visibility is a clear 32 km, though it won’t make braving the cold any easier.

As the sun rises, temperatures will moderate slightly, reaching a high of -19°C this afternoon. Unfortunately, with wind chill still hovering around -23, it won’t exactly feel warm. The UV index is a low 1, meaning sunburn isn’t a concern—just frostbite. If you’re outside for long, cover up completely and limit your exposure.

Tonight: Ice-Cold Once Again

Tonight brings another deep freeze, with just a few clouds in the sky and a low of -30°C. Wind chill will make it feel like -35 overnight, so if you haven’t already, plug in those block heaters and keep pets indoors. Another serious frostbite risk is in effect, so staying inside is the best bet.

Thursday: More Sunshine, No Warmth

Thursday will be mainly sunny, but temperatures are going the wrong way—only reaching a high of -21°C. The morning will start with another extreme wind chill of -36, improving slightly to -28 in the afternoon. Winds will remain light, but that won’t help much. The risk of frostbite continues, so full winter gear is a must.

By nightfall, expect increasing clouds and a 30% chance of flurries, with a low of -25°C.

Looking Ahead: Brief Warm-Up (Sort Of)

Friday brings a mix of sun and cloud with a high of -16°C—which almost feels like a heatwave compared to today. The night will clear up, but temperatures will drop back down to -26°C.

Saturday remains sunny but cold, with a high of -18°C and another frigid overnight low of -28°C. If you were hoping for a break from the cold, you might have to wait a little longer.

How to Dress for This Arctic Blast

Layering is key—thermal base layers, a thick insulated coat, windproof pants, warm gloves, a toque, and a face covering are all non-negotiable in this kind of cold. If you’re outside for more than a few minutes, frostbite is a real danger, so keep exposed skin to a minimum. Hand warmers and wool socks will also go a long way in keeping the chill at bay.

Kenora Weather Trivia

Did you know? Kenora’s coldest temperature on record was a jaw-dropping -45°C, recorded on January 20, 1943. While today’s cold doesn’t quite match that, it’s still a brutal reminder of how harsh Northwestern Ontario winters can be!
