Snow, Wind, and a Deep Freeze

Sioux Lookout faces extreme cold today with wind chills near -31°C and frostbite risks. Flurries and strong winds continue. More bitter cold ahead Tuesday

Sioux Lookout is in full winter mode this Monday morning, with light snow and drifting snow creating a frosty scene. As of 4:00 AM, the temperature sits at -17.3°C, but with a biting west-northwest wind at 21 km/h, it feels more like -27°C. The humidity is at 77%, and visibility is decent at 19 km, despite the blowing snow. Barometric pressure is at 101.8 kPa and rising, suggesting that conditions may settle—though “settling” is relative when wind chills are this brutal.

Today will remain mainly cloudy, with a 30% chance of flurries hanging in the air. The wind will pick up, blowing west at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h. While the high is expected to reach -16°C, it won’t feel that way. The wind chill will make it feel like -31°C this morning and -25°C this afternoon. With these extreme wind chills, frostbite can set in within minutes—so any exposed skin is at serious risk. The UV index will be a low 1, not that many people will be sunbathing today.

Tonight: Even Colder with Frostbite Risks

The mainly cloudy skies continue into the evening, with a lingering 30% chance of flurries. Winds will maintain their strength, blowing west at 20 km/h with gusts up to 40 km/h. The temperature will drop to a frigid -24°C, but the wind chill will make it feel like -26°C in the evening and a bone-cracking -34°C overnight. Frostbite remains a major concern, so if you must head out, bundle up with layers and cover all exposed skin.

Tuesday: More Arctic Air, But Some Sunshine

Tuesday will bring a mix of sun and cloud, with skies clearing early in the afternoon. Winds will shift slightly to come from the northwest at 20 km/h. The high will only reach -17°C, but the wind chill will make it feel like -36°C in the morning and -27°C in the afternoon. Once again, frostbite is a serious threat. The UV index stays at 1.

Tuesday night will be clear, with temperatures dipping to -22°C.

Wednesday: Cloudier with Flurries Possible

By midweek, clouds will return, bringing a 60% chance of flurries and a high of -13°C. Wednesday night will continue the trend, with another 60% chance of flurries and a low of -18°C.

What to Wear?

This is not the time to skimp on winter gear. A heavy-duty insulated coat, thick mittens, a hat, and a scarf are all non-negotiable. Thermal base layers are a must, as are insulated boots. If you’re heading outside for even a short period, make sure all skin is covered—frostbite can develop in as little as 10 minutes in these conditions.

Sioux Lookout’s Weather Trivia
