Winter Weather Update

Chilly and Cloudy with a Hint of Sun

Sudbury sees a cold and cloudy Friday with flurries, followed by a dangerously frigid night. A bitterly cold Saturday gives way to snow by Sunday

Sudbury is off to a cold and cloudy start this Friday morning, with the temperature sitting at -9.7°C. A brisk northeast wind at 26 km/h is making it feel much colder, bringing the wind chill down to a frosty -19°C. The humidity is at 82%, and the barometric pressure is on the rise at 101.4 kPa, indicating a temporary clearing in the skies.

Today’s forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud with a 30% chance of flurries lingering from the early morning hours. The wind will ease slightly, becoming light by early afternoon, but temperatures will struggle to warm up, reaching only a high of -8°C. Wind chills will remain biting, at -18°C this morning and a slightly “warmer” -13°C by the afternoon. The UV index is sitting at a low 1, so sunglasses may be optional.

A Deep Freeze Sets in Tonight

As the evening progresses, skies will clear, but temperatures will take a nosedive. The wind will shift to the north at 20 km/h after midnight, helping to drag the temperature down to a bitterly cold -23°C. The wind chill will drop to -16°C early in the evening before plummeting to a frigid -31°C overnight. This means a high risk of frostbite—exposed skin could freeze in minutes. If you’re heading out, multiple layers, a thick winter coat, gloves, and a face covering are a must.

Weekend Deep Freeze with Snow Incoming

Saturday will be another sunny but brutally cold day. The wind will lighten to 15 km/h, but it won’t do much to ease the chill. The high will only reach -16°C, but the wind chill will make it feel like a dangerous -33°C in the morning and -20°C in the afternoon. Frostbite remains a serious concern, so bundle up if you plan on venturing outside. Clouds will move in Saturday night, bringing a 60% chance of flurries and a low of -16°C.

By Sunday, snow becomes more likely, with periods of snowfall expected throughout the day and a high of -6°C. The snowy pattern will continue into the night, with temperatures holding steady at -6°C.

How to Dress for the Cold?

Today calls for full winter gear, especially with the biting wind chill. Tonight and Saturday will be dangerously cold, so layering is key—thermal base layers, thick socks, and face protection are essential. Sunday brings a slight reprieve from the extreme cold, but with snow on the way, waterproof outerwear will be a good choice.

Weather Trivia: Sudbury’s Record-Breaking Cold

Did you know? Sudbury’s coldest January temperature on record was a staggering -41.1°C, recorded on January 10, 1982. While this weekend will be frigid, it’s nothing compared to that icy milestone!
