Winter Weather Update

A Frosty Morning with a Risk of Frostbite

Good morning, Geraldton and Greenstone! If you thought winter had already shown its coldest cards, think again—today starts at a frigid -21°C, with a biting wind chill of -28°C. The humidity is 77%, and while the sky is mostly cloudy, the air feels anything but cozy. The barometric pressure is at 100.8 kPa, and visibility is a solid 16 km, though it won’t make the deep freeze feel any less intense. A west-northwest wind at 8 km/h is present, but it’s set to pick up to 20 km/h later today, driving that morning wind chill down to a brutal -34°C—which means exposed skin can freeze in minutes.

A Chilly Day with Some Clearing, but No Warmth in Sight

Today remains mainly cloudy, with a 30% chance of flurries early in the morning. The high will only reach -16°C, but with the wind chill staying near -25°C this afternoon, it won’t feel like much of an improvement. If you’re heading out, be sure to cover up—frostbite is a real risk today.

Tonight will see partly cloudy skies, but don’t get too comfortable—snow will begin before morning. The west wind at 20 km/h will become light in the evening, allowing temperatures to drop to -22°C, with a wind chill of -30°C overnight.

Thursday Brings Snow and a Slight Warm-Up

Thursday will be snowy, with 2 to 4 cm expected. Winds remain light, but the morning will feel like -30°C before “warming” to -8°C in the afternoon. That still translates to a wind chill of -11°C, but at least it’s an improvement. The risk of frostbite continues, so don’t be fooled by the slight temperature increase.

Thursday night brings cloudy skies and a 60% chance of flurries, with a low of -19°C.

Looking Ahead: A Deep Freeze and More Snow

Friday is a mix of sun and cloud with a 30% chance of flurries, and a high of -14°C. However, Friday night will be one of the coldest of the season, plunging to -30°C under clear skies.

Saturday offers a slight improvement, with a high of -12°C under a mix of sun and clouds, followed by a 60% chance of flurries at night and a low of -13°C.

Sunday brings another snowy system, with periods of snow throughout the day and a high of -5°C. More snow is expected overnight, with another steep temperature drop to -25°C.

Wardrobe Recommendations: Dress for the Arctic Cold

This is no time for shortcuts when it comes to dressing for the weather. If you’re stepping outside, thermal base layers, a thick winter coat, windproof gloves, and a balaclava or scarf to cover your face are a must. Frostbite can occur in minutes in these conditions, so make sure every bit of skin is protected. Insulated boots with warm socks are essential, as the cold will seep in quickly.

Weather Trivia: Geraldton’s Icy Reputation

Did you know that Geraldton holds a record low of -47.2°C, recorded on January 23, 1935**? While today’s cold is nowhere near that extreme, it’s a good reminder that Northern Ontario winters are not for the faint of heart!
