124 Incidents Addressed, 22 Charges Laid

(NIPIGON, ON) The Nipigon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to 124 occurrences during the week of January 20–26, 2025, handling a wide array of incidents to maintain safety and order in the community.

Key Incident Categories

Traffic and Road Safety:

  • eTickets issued to vehicles: 25
  • R.I.D.E. program stops: 17
  • Traffic hazards (vehicles, debris, animals, pedestrians): 9
  • Traffic complaints: 8
  • Motor vehicle collisions: 6

Community Support and Safety:

  • Ambulance assistance: 4
  • Domestic disputes: 3
  • 911 calls/hang-ups: 3
  • Mental Health Act-related incidents: 1

Law Enforcement and Investigations:

  • Drug offences: 2
  • Assaults: 2
  • Harassment cases: 2
  • Child pornography case: 1
  • Sudden death investigations: 1

The Nipigon OPP also responded to incidents involving fraud, theft, bail violations, and breaches of court orders.

Charges and Enforcement Efforts

The Nipigon detachment laid 5 charges under the Criminal Code and 17 charges under the Highway Traffic Act during this period.

Citizen Self-Reporting Tool

The OPP continues to encourage residents to use its Citizen Self Reporting (CSR) tool for minor, non-emergency incidents. Launched in 2014, CSR allows the public to report specific crimes online without requiring an officer on-site.

Reportable Incidents via CSR:

  • Theft under $5,000
  • Mischief or property damage under $5,000
  • Theft from vehicles
  • Lost or missing property under $5,000
  • Stolen license plates
  • Driving complaints
