Hybrid-Electric Vehicle Challenges Firefighting Efforts

Thunder Bay, ON – On January 6, 2025, at 6:48 PM, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a fully involved garage fire on Normandy Court. All occupants of the home safely evacuated before emergency crews arrived.

While firefighters quickly brought the garage fire under control, a hybrid-electric vehicle parked inside the garage posed unique challenges.

Despite significant water application, the vehicle continued to burn for over 90 minutes before it was fully extinguished.

A total of six pumper crews, one aerial ladder crew, and the Platoon Chief were deployed to contain and extinguish the blaze.
