THUNDER BAY, ON – The Thunder Bay District Jail, evacuated on November 25th due to a boiler failure, is expected to remain closed until the new year. This is putting added pressure on families as their loved ones are unable to be visited.
The nearly century-old facility’s heating system malfunctioned, forcing the relocation of approximately 180 inmates to other correctional facilities across Ontario. This includes sources tell NetNewsLedger some adults who are being housed in the JRL in Thunder Bay.
While backup systems were operational, the evacuation was deemed necessary as a precaution.
Anthony Rojik, president of Ontario Public Service Employees’ Union Local 737, which represents over 150 correctional staff at the jail, confirmed that planning and repairs are underway. However, there is no firm timeline for completion.
“I anticipate that we will not resume operations until the new year,” Rojik states.
The aging facility is going to be replaced by a new jail in the near future.
