THUNDER BAY, ON – Good news for Northerners! Starting today, accessing specialized medical care just got easier and more affordable, thanks to significant improvements to the Ontario Northern Health Travel Grant.
The Ford government is investing $45 million over the next three years to expand the program, ensuring residents have better access to the healthcare they need, without breaking the bank.
“Our government is committed to expanding healthcare access across the province, especially in the North,” said Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones. “These improvements will reduce costs and simplify the process, making it easier for Northern families to connect to vital care.”
Here’s what’s changing:
- Increased overnight allowances: Accommodation allowances are increasing from $100 to $175 per night, with the total allowance for longer stays (8+ nights) jumping from $550 to $1,150.
- Shorter distance requirement: You can now qualify for overnight accommodation assistance if you travel 100 kilometres (down from 200 kilometres) for treatment.
- Support for travel companions: Medical travel companions accompanying hospitalized patients are now eligible for assistance.
- Faster application process: No more waiting for signatures from referring healthcare providers!
- Every kilometre counts: The 100-kilometre deductible has been eliminated, and you’ll be reimbursed for every kilometre travelled.
- More eligible providers and locations: More healthcare providers and facilities, including community laboratories, are now covered.
Coming soon: A user-friendly online application with digital receipt submission is expected in Spring 2025, promising faster reimbursements.
Who benefits?
The Northern Health Travel Grant helps Northern Ontarians access OHIP-insured health services not available within 100 kilometres of their home. This includes specialist appointments, diagnostic services, and even fertility treatments through the expanded Ontario Fertility Program.
This initiative is part of the government’s “Your Health” plan, focused on providing connected and convenient care for all Ontarians, regardless of where they live.
