THUNDER BAY – LIVING – Winter in Northwestern Ontario is no joke. With heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and unpredictable road conditions, it’s crucial to be prepared for anything Mother Nature throws your way.

This morning there are some highway situations to be aware of according to 511ON.ca

Over the course of the winter being prepared for long traffic delays has become all too common in our region. Serious collisions can close the highway for hours. Having ways to stay safe and comfortable is key.

That means having a well-stocked vehicle safety kit is essential for every driver.

Don’t get caught off guard! Here’s a checklist of must-have items to keep in your vehicle throughout the winter months:

For Warmth and Safety:

  • Warm Clothing: Pack extra layers of clothing, including hats, mittens, scarves, and warm socks, in case you get stranded or need to walk for help.
  • Blankets: Keep a few warm blankets or a sleeping bag in your vehicle for extra warmth.
  • Hand and Foot Warmers: These small packets can provide much-needed warmth in an emergency.
  • First-Aid Kit: A well-stocked first-aid kit is essential for treating minor injuries.
  • Flashlight with Extra Batteries: A reliable flashlight is crucial for visibility in low-light conditions or during power outages.
  • Candles and Matches/Lighter: These can provide light and some warmth if you’re stranded. (Use with caution and proper ventilation.)
  • Whistle: A whistle can be used to signal for help if you become stranded.
  • Reflective Vest and Road Flares: Increase your visibility to other drivers if you need to stop on the side of the road.

For Vehicle Maintenance and Emergency Situations:

  • Ice Scraper/Snow Brush: Essential for clearing snow and ice from your vehicle.
  • Shovel: A small shovel can help you dig your vehicle out of snow if you get stuck.
  • Booster Cables: Essential for jump-starting your vehicle if the battery dies.
  • Tow Rope: A tow rope can be a lifesaver if you need to be pulled out of a ditch or snowbank.
  • Traction Aids: Sand, salt, or kitty litter can help provide traction if your wheels get stuck.
  • Windshield Washer Fluid: Ensure you have plenty of winter-grade washer fluid to keep your windshield clear.
  • Extra Fuel: Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel lines from freezing.
  • Food and Water: Pack non-perishable food items like granola bars, nuts, and dried fruit, and keep bottled water in your vehicle. A supply of Road Snacks is likely key as well.

For the kids!

If you are stuck in traffic with the kids, many parts of the region do not have cellular phone service, having some books, games, and having a plan of activities for in the car is important.

Additional Tips for Winter Driving:

  • Plan Your Route: Check road conditions and weather forecasts before heading out.
  • Inform Someone of Your Travel Plans: Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to arrive.
  • Charge Your Cell Phone: Ensure your phone is fully charged before you leave.
  • Drive According to Conditions: Adjust your speed and driving habits to the prevailing road conditions.
  • Stay Alert and Avoid Distractions: Focus on the road and avoid distractions like cell phones.

By taking the time to prepare and equip your vehicle with these essential items, you can significantly increase your safety and peace of mind while driving in Northwestern Ontario this winter.
