Timmins, ON – The Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund (NADF) celebrated Indigenous achievement at its 32nd Annual NADF Awards gala held on October 18th, 2024. The event, held in partnership with Perimeter Aviation, recognized the outstanding contributions of Indigenous individuals and businesses across Northern Ontario.
This year, six new recipients were honoured, bringing the total number of awardees to 199 over the program’s 32-year history. The awards acknowledged excellence in six categories: Partnership, Startup Business, Young Entrepreneur, Small Business, Excellence in Leadership, and Business Excellence.
Partnership of the Year: Takwata NPLH Drilling Limited Partnership
The Partnership of the Year award, sponsored by Ontario Power Generation, went to Takwata NPLH Drilling Limited Partnership. This groundbreaking collaboration between Taykwa Tagamou Nation and NPLH Drilling exemplifies Indigenous economic empowerment. The partnership has secured a five-year contract with Agnico Eagle for diamond drilling at the Detour Lake mine, creating economic opportunities and supporting sustainable resource development.
Startup Business of the Year: Crawford Mechanical Ltd.
Crawford Mechanical Ltd., owned by Garret and Connor Crawford of Taykwa Tagamou Nation, took home the Startup Business of the Year award, sponsored by Neegani Investment Management Inc. This Timmins-based HVAC company has quickly gained a reputation for quality service and commitment to supporting First Nations communities.
Young Entrepreneur of the Year: Dustin and Hope Wesley, Uniglass Plus Ziebart
Dustin and Hope Wesley of Uniglass Plus Ziebart were named Young Entrepreneurs of the Year, an award sponsored by TD Bank. Dustin, a member of Moose Cree First Nation, has built a thriving automotive service business in Timmins. His story of perseverance and dedication, along with his wife Hope’s unwavering support, is an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs.
Small Business of the Year: Emily-Ann Deschamps, Pine Meadows Pet Resort
Emily-Ann Deschamps, owner of Pine Meadows Pet Resort and a member of Fort Albany First Nation, received the Small Business of the Year award, sponsored by Agnico Eagle. Her dedication to animal care and community involvement has made Pine Meadows a trusted name in Timmins. The resort also partners with rescue organizations to find homes for dogs in need.
Excellence in Leadership: Derek Archibald, Deputy Chief Taykwa Tagamou Nation
The Excellence in Leadership award, sponsored by Hydro One, was presented to Derek Archibald, Deputy Chief of Taykwa Tagamou Nation. Archibald’s leadership has fostered impactful partnerships and secured economic development projects that prioritize community growth and environmental sustainability.
Business Excellence: Niiwin General Partnership
Niiwin General Partnership, a leading First Nation-owned contractor, received the Business Excellence award, sponsored by Perimeter Aviation. This partnership of four First Nations – Flying Post, Matachewan, Matagami, and Atikipi Anicinapek Nation – has achieved significant success in the mining and heavy industry sectors while prioritizing safety and responsible resource management.
