New Wildland Fire Reported Near Sault Ste. Marie, Fire Hazard Low in Most Areas

A new fire is confirmed in the Northeast Region as officials remind residents of safe burning practices.

The Aviation, Forest Fire, and Emergency Services reported a new wildfire on Thursday, October 10. The Sault Ste. Marie 17 (SAU017) fire spans 0.5 hectares and remains uncontrolled. Located 2.5 km east of Highway 129 and 6 km southwest of Aubrey Lake, fire crews are monitoring the situation.

Currently, there are 9 active wildfires in the Northeast Region, with one not under control. The fire hazard is generally low, except for a moderate risk area stretching from the Bruce Peninsula to Chapleau.

Stay Safe While Burning Outdoors

As fall continues, residents are reminded to follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations. Consider alternative methods for disposing of yard waste, such as composting or local landfill use. If burning is necessary, fires should only be lit two hours before sunset and fully extinguished two hours after sunrise. Ensure water and tools are available to contain the fire.

No Drone Zone & Waterbomber Safety

Flying drones near wildfires is dangerous and illegal. Stay clear of forest fires to ensure the safety of emergency personnel. If on a watercraft near waterbombers, move to the shore to allow them to scoop water safely.
