Police safely conclude a tense, four-hour standoff in Attawapiskat, with one male facing multiple charges

(Attawapiskat, ON) – A man is in custody following a four-hour armed standoff in Attawapiskat First Nation on Sunday, Oct. 6.

Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) responded to reports of an armed individual barricaded inside a home on Spruce Street. The area was swiftly secured to ensure the safety of the community.

Upon arrival, police determined the suspect was armed with a firearm. The NAPS Emergency Response Team was called in, and after extensive negotiations, the man surrendered peacefully. He was medically cleared and taken into custody.

Roland Iahtail, 43, of Attawapiskat, faces several charges, including:

• Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
• Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
• Possession of Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
• Uttering Threats – Damage to Property

Iahtail appeared in bail court on Monday, Oct. 7, and was remanded with a future court date.
