Wildfire Update

SAULT STE MARIE – Wildfire Update – Aviation, Forest Fire, and Emergency Services (AFFES) reports no new wildland fires confirmed in the Northeast Region as of early evening, Saturday, October 5, 2024.

Active Wildfires in the Northeast

Currently, there are 8 active wildfires in the Northeast Region, and all are being monitored by firefighting teams. Fortunately, none of these fires pose an immediate threat to communities.

Fire Hazard Levels

The fire hazard remains moderate to high across most of the Northeast Region. However, areas around North Bay, Algonquin Provincial Park, and Peawanuck are experiencing low hazard conditions. Residents are encouraged to stay informed by checking Ontario’s interactive map for the latest fire danger ratings.

Outdoor Burning Safety Reminder

With fall yard cleanups underway, AFFES reminds residents to exercise caution when burning debris. Composting or utilizing local landfills are the safest methods for disposing of yard waste. If burning is necessary, it’s crucial to follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations:

  • Fires should only be ignited two hours before sunset and extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise.
  • Ensure that you have enough tools or water on hand to contain the fire.

Safety Around Firefighting Operations

  • No Drone Zone: Flying drones near wildfires is illegal and poses a severe risk to firefighting efforts. Keep all drones away from fire zones.
  • Stay Clear of Waterbombers: If you are near a body of water used by waterbombers, move to the shore so planes can safely scoop water. Waterbombers will not operate if there are watercraft in their path.

Reporting Wildland Fires

  • North of French and Mattawa Rivers: Dial 310-FIRE to report wildland fires.
  • South of French and Mattawa Rivers: Dial 9-1-1.

Stay safe and stay informed as the fire season continues.
