Sault Ste. Marie – Wildfire Update – The Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services has released an update on the current wildfire situation in the Northeast Region as of Friday, October 4, 2024, at 5:50 p.m.
Current Fire Activity
No new wildland fires were confirmed in the Northeast Region as of early evening on Friday. Currently, there are eight active wildland fires in the region, all of which are being monitored.
Fire Hazard Levels
The fire hazard across most of the Northeast Region remains low to moderate. However, higher fire hazards have been identified in the areas surrounding Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst. Outdoor Burning Safety Reminder
As we move into the fall, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services urges the public to exercise caution with outdoor burning. Instead of burning yard waste and woody debris, consider composting or using your local landfill. If burning is necessary, ensure you are following Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations:
- Fires should be ignited no earlier than two hours before sunset and must be fully extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise.
- Always have adequate tools and water on hand to control the fire.

No Drone Zone
Flying drones near active forest fires is dangerous and illegal. Drones pose a serious risk to pilots, firefighters, and emergency personnel. Always stay clear of forest fires and avoid using drones in these areas.
Waterbomber Safety
If you’re on a lake or river and see a waterbomber approaching, move close to the shore to allow it to scoop water safely. Waterbombers will not operate if nearby watercraft pose a hazard. Stay safe and keep a distance from waterbombing operations.
