New Wildfire in Thunder Bay Area
One new wildfire was confirmed in the Northwest Region by Thursday evening:

  • Thunder Bay 17 (THU017): This 0.1-hectare fire is located 20 km south of Highway 11, near West Nelson Road and the Wawiag River. It is currently not under control.

At present, there are 12 active fires in the Northwest Region:

  • 1 is not under control,
  • 1 is being held,
  • 10 are under observation.

Additionally, two fires were extinguished in the past 24 hours.

Fire Hazard Conditions
The wildfire risk in the Northwest Region varies widely, ranging from low to extreme. The Far North sees mostly low risk, while the rest of the region experiences moderate to high hazard levels. One extreme hazard zone exists in the Red Lake Fire Management Sector, near Woodland Caribou Provincial Park.

Stay Informed: Fire Safety During Fall
As the season transitions into fall, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services advises caution during outdoor burning. Composting or using local landfills for yard waste disposal is encouraged. If burning is necessary, follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations:

  • Fires must be lit no earlier than two hours before sunset and fully extinguished two hours after sunrise.
  • Have adequate tools and water on hand to control the fire.
