Current Fire Status in Northwest Region

  • As of late afternoon on September 18, no new wildland fires were confirmed in the Northwest Region.
  • Active Fires:
    • Total Fires: 25
    • Under control: 1
    • Being observed: 24

Fire Hazard Conditions

  • Low Hazard: Most of the Kenora, Dryden, Red Lake, and Sioux Lookout fire management sectors.
  • Moderate to High Hazard: Fort Frances, Thunder Bay, southern Nipigon sectors, and parts of the far north continue to experience higher fire risk.

Important Outdoor Burning Guidelines

With fall approaching, Aviation, Forest Fire, and Emergency Services remind the public to use extreme caution when conducting any outdoor burning. Composting or utilizing local landfills for yard waste and woody debris is recommended. If burning is necessary, follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations.

  • Fire Timing: Fires should be ignited no earlier than two hours before sunset and fully extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise.
  • Safety Measures: Always ensure you have sufficient tools and water to contain any fires at the site.
