THUNDER BAY – NEWS – One of the beauties of living in Thunder Bay is that our city is also home to a lot of wildlife. Often that also includes black bears.

After sightings in Northwood, the Ontario government is reminding Thunder Bay residents to be vigilant after recent bear sightings. Bears are attracted to garbage, bird food, BBQ smells, and ripe fruit.

To reduce encounters, secure trash and clean outdoor areas.

If You Encounter a Bear While Walking:

  • Stay calm and don’t run. Slowly back away while facing the bear.
  • Make noise. Speak loudly to alert the bear of your presence.
  • Dog owners: Keep dogs on a leash and under control, as dogs can provoke bears. If a bear approaches, pull your dog close and slowly retreat. Avoid startling the bear.

Bear-Proof Your Camp or Cottage

  • Store food in bear-resistant containers or inside your home.
  • Remove garbage regularly and keep it in secure bins.
  • Clean BBQs thoroughly and avoid leaving food out.

Emergency Contacts:

  • If a bear is aggressive or poses a threat, call 911 or local police.
  • For non-emergencies and advice on reducing bear attractants, call the Bear Wise hotline at 1-866-514-2327.

Editor’s Note: A number of years ago in Kam River Park out walking, I encountered a black bear. Standing and being prepared to slowly retreat, the bear who was stamping its feet, retreated and climbed a tree. Being calm in the face of a bear isn’t easy, but it is very important.
