Firefighters work tirelessly to prevent dust explosion and control blaze under intense heat
THUNDER BAY – Just after 8:00 AM on Tuesday, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to an automatic fire alarm at a local grain elevator. Upon arrival, crews were directed to the bin floor, where they discovered smoke and high temperatures coming from machinery located on the upper level.
The situation was complex due to the risk of a potential dust explosion—an ever-present hazard in grain storage facilities. Firefighters also had to contend with extremely hot and humid weather, which added to the challenge of containing the incident.
Over several hours, six pumpers, an aerial ladder, and a command vehicle were deployed to manage the emergency. Thanks to the dedicated effort of the teams, the fire was successfully brought under control.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds the public to always evacuate immediately when a fire alarm sounds for your own safety.
