Northwest Region

DRYDEN – WILDFIRE Update – By the evening of August 28, two new wildland fires were confirmed in Northwestern Ontario.

  • Red Lake 41 (RED041): This fire, measuring 2.0 hectares, is located about 2 kilometers south of Trout Lake, between Otter Lake and Joyce Lake. The fire is currently not under control.
  • Fort Frances 10 (FOR010): Situated 11.7 kilometers east of Highway 622, at the southern end of Sedgwick Lake, this fire covers 0.1 hectares and is under control.

Fire of Note

  • Nipigon 36 (NIP036): Located south of Kasabonika Lake First Nation, this fire is now classified as being held. After remapping, the fire is recorded at 38.8 hectares. FireRanger crews are making significant progress in managing this fire.

As of this report, there are 36 active wildland fires in the Northwest Region:

  • 1 fire is not under control.
  • 1 fire is being held.
  • 3 fires are under control.
  • 31 fires are being observed.

Wildland Fire Hazard

The overall fire hazard in the Northwest Region is high. However, moderate to low hazard levels are observed along the southeastern border and near the Manitoba border in the Red Lake sector. An extreme hazard area is noted in the Far North of the Sioux Lookout sector.

Outdoor Burning Safety Reminder

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services urges the public to exercise caution during outdoor burning. Consider alternative methods like composting or using local landfills for yard waste disposal. If burning is necessary, strictly adhere to Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations:

  • Fires should be ignited no earlier than two hours before sunset and extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise.
  • Always ensure you have the necessary tools and water to manage the fire.

Stay Clear of Waterbombers!

If you see a waterbomber approaching a lake or river, please move your watercraft to the shore immediately. Waterbombers cannot scoop water if boats or other obstacles are in their path.
