SAULT Ste. Marie – Wildfire Update – Two new wildland fires have been confirmed in the Northeast Region as of the evening of August 28:
- Wawa 15 (WAW015): This fire, located on the south shore of Babitabonanik Bay on White Lake near Pic Mobert, was 0.1 hectares in size and has now been declared out.
- Cochrane 39 (COC039): Covering 10 hectares, this fire is situated 1.4 kilometers east of the Lawagamau River and 12 kilometers west of the Quebec border. It is currently being observed.
As of this update, there are 27 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region:
- 2 fires are being held.
- 2 fires are under control.
- 23 fires are being observed.
Fire of Note
- Kirkland Lake 5 (KLK005): Now being held, this fire is 889 hectares in size. It is located about 5 kilometers north of Stull Lake, 5 kilometers southeast of McKee Lake, and roughly 80 kilometers west of Latchford. FireRanger crews have established a hoseline perimeter and continue to make substantial progress in controlling this fire.
Wildland Fire Hazard
The fire hazard is mainly low to moderate from Marathon to Cochrane, extending to the Quebec border and southwards. However, high hazard conditions prevail north of this line up to the Hudson Bay coast.

No Drone Zone: Keep the Skies Safe!
Flying drones near forest fires is not only illegal but also extremely dangerous. Drones pose significant risks to pilots, firefighters, and emergency personnel. To help keep everyone safe, avoid flying drones anywhere near forest fires.
Stay Clear of Waterbombers!
If you are on a body of water and see a waterbomber approaching, please move your watercraft to the shore. Waterbombers cannot scoop water if watercraft are present, which can hinder firefighting efforts. Stay safe and clear the way.
