Winnipeg Crime Update: Abduction Leads to Arrest

(Winnipeg, MB) – On August 16, 2024, at approximately 4:00 a.m., North District General Patrol officers responded to a disturbing abduction and assault incident in Winnipeg.

An adult male reported that on the evening of August 13, he was confronted at his residence on Millpond Path by two males, one of whom he knew. The victim was assaulted, forcibly abducted, and taken to an undisclosed location where he was sexually assaulted with a firearm. His phone and passport were also stolen before he was eventually released. The victim later contacted the police.

The investigation, led by the Major Crimes Unit, resulted in the identification and arrest of one suspect, 34-year-old Gurpreet Vehniwal of West St. Paul. Vehniwal has been charged with multiple serious offenses, including:

  • Robbery
  • Kidnapping
  • Sexual Assault with a Firearm
  • Extortion
  • Break and Enter and Commit Robbery
  • Break and Enter with Intent
  • Attempt to Obstruct Justice
  • Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm
  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Pointing a Firearm
  • Careless Use of a Firearm, Ammunition, Prohibited Weapon, or Device

Vehniwal is currently in custody as the Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate.
