THUNDER BAY – A potential nationwide strike by over 9,000 Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) employees is looming, threatening to disrupt travel and trade across Canada’s borders. Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and the Customs and Immigration Union (CIU) are prepared to take job action starting June 7th at 4 p.m. ET if a new contract agreement is not reached with the CBSA and Treasury Board this week.

PSAC National President Sharon DeSousa expressed hope for a resolution, stating, “We are still hopeful that we can reach an agreement to avoid strike action and any potential delays at Canada’s borders. But the clock is ticking for Trudeau’s Liberal government to get to work on a fair contract for our members.”

Key issues in the stalled negotiations include fair wages that align with other law enforcement agencies, flexible work arrangements, equitable retirement benefits, and stronger workplace protections. CBSA workers have been without a contract for over two years.

A similar job action in 2021 caused significant disruptions at airports and border crossings, highlighting the potential impact of a full-scale strike. CIU National President Mark Weber emphasized the union’s resolve, saying, “Our members have overwhelmingly told us they are prepared to fight for fair wages, equitable retirement and to make CBSA a better place to work. It’s time for the government to step up for CBSA employees.”

Both sides are currently engaged in mediated negotiations in a final effort to avert a strike. The outcome of these talks will determine whether Canadians face disruptions at the border starting this Friday.
