KINGFISHER LAKE FIRST NATION, ON – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are aiding the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) in an assault investigation that left one person critically injured.
On Monday, May 27, 2024, NAPS officers were alerted to an assault at a residence within Kingfisher Lake First Nation. The victim, suffering severe and life-threatening injuries, was airlifted to a hospital for urgent medical care.
Due to the severity of the injuries, NAPS sought assistance from the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) on May 28, 2024.
By May 29, 2024, NAPS officers had arrested and charged 18-year-old Dakota Bighead of Kingfisher Lake First Nation with:
- Aggravated Assault (Section 268(1) of the Criminal Code)
- Escape Lawful Custody (Section 145(1) of the Criminal Code)
Bighead remains in custody and is set to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on June 3, 2024.
The investigation continues under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with support from the OPP Major Case Investigation Team, Regional Support Team, and Provincial Liaison Team.
