Northwest Region Forest Fire Situation Update

Northwest Region Overview

As of late afternoon on June 1, 2024, there are no new confirmed wildfires and no active fires burning in the Northwest Region.

Fire Hazard Levels

The wildland fire hazard varies across the Northwest Region:

  • Moderate to Low: Kenora, Fort Frances, Dryden, and Red Lake sectors.
  • High: Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, and Nipigon sectors, with some areas showing moderate and low hazard conditions.

Outdoor Burning Regulations

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services reminds the public to exercise caution with outdoor burning. Consider composting or using local landfills for yard waste and woody debris disposal. If burning is necessary, adhere to Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations:

  • Fires should be ignited no sooner than two hours before sunset and extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise.
  • Always have adequate tools and water to contain the fire on-site.

Reporting Wildfires

  • North of the French and Mattawa Rivers: Dial 310-FIRE.
  • South of the French and Mattawa Rivers: Dial 9-1-1.
