The Championship, England’s fiercely competitive second tier of football, is an absolute battleground and often truly unpredictable, with games coming thick and fast throughout the gruelling season.
However, despite the excitement and drama, lengthy unbeaten streaks are not uncommon amongst the twists and turns of the Championship.
From Southampton’s staggering 23 games without defeat to West Bromwich Albion’s defiant nine-match stretch, we have witnessed several notable unbeaten streaks in this captivating campaign.
As the season prepares to reach its thrilling conclusion, there’s not a lot to separate Leicester City, Leeds United, and Ipswich Town.
With just one point in it at the time of writing, Championship promotion odds 2023/24 are far from clear-cut in an incredibly close race for the lucrative top two spots.
So, with the fight for automatic promotion firmly on, let’s take a look at some of the unbeaten streaks that could define this memorable campaign.
Southampton – 23 games
The Saints marched to a 23-game unbeaten streak, setting a new club record for their longest spell without defeat this season.
Southampton’s incredible run included eight straight Championship victories at St. Mary’s Stadium, in which they scored 28 times and conceded just five.
Bristol City brought their run to an abrupt end with a 3-1 defeat in February, and Southampton have won just four of their last 10 (at the time of writing).
Russell Martin’s men have lost crucial ground in the race for automatic promotion as a result and will have to fight for a place back in the Championship via the play-offs.
Leeds United – 15 games
Leeds United kicked 2024 off with a fantastic run, going unbeaten in 15 games to help them close the gap on the automatic promotion places.
When the calendars reset, the Yorkshire side were some 17 points behind table-toppers Leicester City in fourth place.
However, a run of 13 wins and just two draws has resulted in Leeds applying pressure on the Foxes in the top spot.
Daniel Farke will be hoping that a loss to Coventry and a 0-0 draw with Sunderland will not derail his side’s automatic promotion bid.
Leicester City – 10 games
While Leicester City are certainly not as comfortable at the top of the table as they once were, boasting a healthy advantage over second place, they are still the favourites to clinch the title in the Championship outrights.
The Foxes made an incredible start to the campaign when picking up 39 of a possible 45 points after 15 games, and their best run of form came between November 25 and January 1.
The Midlands side went 10 games without defeat in that stretch, which included eight wins, and helped them build on a run of nine straight wins earlier in the campaign.
Leicester have been inconsistent in their last 10 outings, with five defeats, four wins, and a draw leaving them in danger of scuppering the league title.
Coventry City – 10 games
Coventry City had their Premier League dreams shattered by Luton Town at Wembley last season, devastatingly losing the play-off final on penalties to the Hatters.
They are currently in danger of missing the play-offs entirely this campaign, as they trail just outside the top six, but they are still in with a chance with a few games to spare.
The Sky Blues enjoyed a run of 10 games without defeat that started with a 2-0 win over Birmingham City in December and ended with a 2-1 loss to Norwich City in February,
Coventry went six and drew four in that time, and need to rediscover that consistency if they want to climb into the play-offs.
