Crimebeat – Edmonton Police filing First Degree Murder Charges in University of Alberta shootings

NNLCRIMEbeatEDMONTON – Crimebeat – The Edmonton Police Service has identified a person of interest in the early-morning shootings at the University of Alberta. Homicide Investigators are trying to determine the whereabouts of Travis Brandon Baumgartner, 21, a G4S employee, who is believed to be one of several armoured company employees that attended the U of A around midnight today, Friday, June 15, 2012, to make a delivery.
The Edmonton Police Service is in the process of filing Canada-wide warrants for first degree murder (three counts) and attempted murder (one count) against Travis Brandon Baumgartner, 21, of Edmonton.

“With the approval of the Crown, we now believe we have reasonable, probable grounds, that this is the person responsible for this terrible crime,” said Bob Hassel, EPS Supt. Criminal Investigations Div. “We want to encourage anyone who may know of this individual’s whereabouts to contact EPS immediately.”

Travis Baumgartner – Edmonton Police seek him and warn he is likely armed and dangerous.

Police believe Baumgartner is “armed and dangerous” and are urging the public to use extreme caution should they happen to encounter Baumgartner.

Baumgartner is the owner of a dark blue Ford F-150 pick-up truck with an Alberta licence plate number, ZRE 724. Baumgartner’s status in relation to this investigation is unknown at this time. Members of the public are urged to use extreme caution if they happen to come in to contact with Baumgartner, and to contact the EPS complaint line at 780-423-4567 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

“To the families of those involved, and to the co-workers of these employees from G4S, all of us here at the Edmonton Police Service, and all the citizens of Edmonton, share your feelings of shock and disbelief,” said EPS Police Chief Rod Knecht. “Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time. Victim Services employees have been assigned to work with each one of the families involved, and senior executives from G4S will be arriving in Edmonton shortly to meet with their employees here.”

EPS member were called out to the university’s Hub Mall area after midnight, June 15, 2012, after receiving a call of shots fired.

Upon arrival, police found three deceased individuals and a fourth who was transported to hospital with undetermined injuries. EPS investigators have since confirmed the shootings were the result of an armed robbery of an armoured vehicle making deliveries at the U of A’s Hub Mall building.

Homicide detectives are now presiding over the crime scene.
