Weekly Updates and Outdoor Burning Regulations Now in Effect

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON) – April 8, 2024 – With the arrival of April 1st, the Northeast Fire Region has officially stepped into the fire season, triggering the activation of Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations. In response to the seasonal risk, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services announces that updates on the fire situation will be provided bi-weekly, every Monday and Thursday, starting from the beginning of the fire season.

Current Fire Situation in the Northeast Region

As of today, the Northeast Region reports no active wildland fires. The diligent efforts of the firefighting teams have successfully contained and called out three recent incidents:

  • Sault Ste Marie 1: A minor fire, covering only 0.1 of a hectare, was efficiently managed north of Red Rock Road, in Red Rock.
  • Wawa 1 and Wawa 2: Both fires occurred east of Highway 614 and north of Eric Lake, each consuming a similar area of 0.1 of a hectare.

Adherence to Outdoor Burning Regulations Urged

The Aviation, Forest Fire, and Emergency Services team emphasizes the importance of cautious outdoor burning during the season. The community is encouraged to consider alternative methods for disposing of yard waste and woody debris, such as composting or utilizing local landfill services. For those who opt to burn, it is imperative to strictly follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations to prevent unintended wildfires. Key guidelines include initiating fires no sooner than two hours before sunset and ensuring they are extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise, with appropriate tools and water on hand to manage the fire.

How to Report a Wildland Fire

Residents can report wildland fires based on their geographic location:

  • North of the French and Mattawa rivers: Dial 310-FIRE.
  • South of the French or Mattawa Rivers: Dial 9-1-1.
