Four-Month Probe Leads to Arrest on Serious Charges

ATIKOKAN  – News – Following a comprehensive four-month investigation, the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) alongside the Rainy River District Crime Unit, has brought forward several sexual offence charges against an individual from Atikokan. This arrest underlines the ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to address and combat sexual crimes within the community.

In late October 2023, the Atikokan OPP was alerted to allegations of historical sexual offences occurring within the vicinity. This tip-off prompted a thorough investigation which culminated in the arrest of Tyler Herbert, a 41-year-old resident of Atikokan. The charges laid against Herbert are grave and include luring minors via telecommunication for illicit purposes and the distribution of sexually explicit material to individuals under the age of 16.

Herbert is currently detained, awaiting a bail hearing set for March 3rd, 2024, at the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay. This case brings to light the critical issue of safeguarding our youth against predatory behaviors online and in our communities.

The OPP is extending a call to the public for any additional information that may further the investigation. They stress the importance of community vigilance and encourage anyone with relevant information or those who believe they may also be victims of similar offences to come forward. The Rainy River District OPP can be contacted anonymously at 1-888-310-1122.

Recognizing the profound impact of sexual offences on victims, the police remind the public of the available support systems.
